Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly. Regularly test your alarm and change your batteries every year.

Create a plan

Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors.

Electrical products

Dusty’s recommends that you have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician, including electrical inspections, when buying or remodelling a home. Wiring and related equipment account for 7 percent of all home fires and nine percent of all home fire deaths.

Extinguishers

A portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the fire department arrives; but portable extinguishers have limitations. Because fire grows and spreads so rapidly, the #1 priority for residents is to get out safely.

Proper Signage

Help identify various exits, fire extinguishers, and other suppressants quickly. With the quick spread of most fires, it’s important to have properly marked signage around your property to stay prepared for any emergency and to stay compliant to federal and provincial regulations.
